Area —
UnitArea

Traditional units vary by region. Kanal = 20 marla; bigha uses 27,225 sq ft (⅝ acre, pucca bigha); killa = 1 acre; murabba = 25 acres.

How to use the area calculator

  1. Choose Area of a shape or Convert land units.
  2. For a shape, pick it from the list, choose the unit your measurements are in and enter each dimension.
  3. Choose the marla standard used in your area and the unit to show the result in.
  4. Read the main result and the full conversion table, or save it as a PDF.

Two tools in one

Shape mode calculates area from dimensions for rectangles, squares, triangles (base × height or three sides), circles, ellipses, trapezoids, parallelograms, rhombuses and kites. Converter mode turns any land measurement into every other unit, which is handy when a listing quotes kanal and your bank wants square feet.

Area formulas used

Shape Formula
Rectangle length × width
Square side²
Triangle ½ × base × height
Triangle (3 sides) √(s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)), s = (a+b+c)/2
Circle π × r²
Ellipse π × a × b
Trapezoid ½ × (a + b) × h
Parallelogram base × height
Rhombus / Kite (d₁ × d₂) ÷ 2

Worked example

A plot measures 30 ft × 60 ft:

  • Area = 30 × 60 = 1,800 sq ft = 167.23 m² = 200 sq yd
  • With a 225 sq ft marla: 1,800 ÷ 225 = 8 marla
  • With a 272.25 sq ft marla: 6.61 marla

The same plot can be advertised as “8 marla” in Islamabad and about “6.6 marla” by the revenue standard, which is exactly why the marla setting matters.

1 kanal 20 marla
1 killa 1 acre (Punjab)
1 murabba 25 acres
1 gunta (guntha) 1,089 sq ft · ¹⁄₄₀ acre

1 bigha (pucca) 27,225 sq ft · ⅝ acre
1 dhur 68.06 sq ft

Measuring tips

  • Measure inside boundary walls consistently, or the outer edges, but don’t mix the two.
  • For sloped land, use horizontal distances, as surveyors do, not distances along the slope.
  • For irregular plots, triangulate: split the shape into triangles, measure all three sides of each, and add up the results from the three-sides mode.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in one marla?

It depends on the region. The traditional revenue marla is 272.25 sq ft; Lahore Development Authority uses 250 sq ft; Islamabad and many housing societies use 225 sq ft. Select the standard that applies to your plot.

How many marla are in one kanal?

One kanal is always 20 marla, so it is 5,445 sq ft with a 272.25 sq ft marla, 5,000 sq ft with a 250 sq ft marla and 4,500 sq ft with a 225 sq ft marla.

How big is an acre in square feet and hectares?

One acre is exactly 43,560 sq ft, 4,046.86 square metres or 0.4047 hectares. One hectare is 10,000 m², about 2.471 acres.

Why does bigha vary so much?

Bigha is a traditional unit whose size differs by state and even district. This calculator uses the pucca bigha of 27,225 sq ft (⅝ acre). Always confirm against your local land records office.

How do I find the area of an irregular plot?

Split it into rectangles and triangles, calculate each with this tool, and add them together. For a four-sided plot with known sides and a diagonal, use the three-sides triangle mode twice.
