Thumbnail design tips (for your own videos)
- Upload custom thumbnails at 1280 × 720 (16:9), under 2 MB, as JPG or PNG.
- Use 3–5 words at most, large enough to read at phone size.
- Keep the important subject away from the bottom-right corner, where the timestamp sits.
- Make sure the thumbnail still reads at 320 × 180, the size most viewers actually see.

Which YouTube links work?
Standard watch links (youtube.com/watch?v=…), short links (youtu.be/…), Shorts, embed, live and mobile (m.youtube.com) links all work. You can also paste just the 11-character video ID.
Why is the maximum resolution thumbnail missing?
YouTube only generates a 1280×720 "maxres" thumbnail when the video was uploaded in HD or has a custom thumbnail of that size. If it doesn't exist, it is hidden and the next best size is shown.
Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?
Viewing and saving thumbnails for personal reference is generally fine, but thumbnails are copyrighted by the video's creator. Get permission before reusing one publicly or commercially, unless your use falls under fair use where you live.
Why did Download open the image in a new tab?
Some browsers block direct cross-site downloads. When that happens the image opens in a new tab — right-click (or long-press on mobile) and choose Save image.
