“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…” You’ve seen it on website mockups, template brochures and unfinished apps. It looks like Latin, and it almost is. Its story stretches over two thousand years.

Cicero, 45 BC

The text comes from “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical treatise by the Roman statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero, written in 45 BC. The work debates the theories of ethics held by the Epicureans, Stoics and others.

The relevant passage, from Book 1, sections 1.10.32–33, begins:

“Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…”

Roughly: “Nor is there anyone who loves, pursues or desires pain itself, because it is pain…”

Notice that “lorem” isn’t a real Latin word. It’s the second half of “dolorem” (pain), chopped off mid-word.

The printer’s scramble

The standard story, popularised in the 1990s by Latin scholar Richard McClintock, who traced the source, is that an unknown printer took Cicero’s passage, scrambled and truncated it, and used it to fill a type specimen book: a catalogue showing off typefaces. It’s often dated to the 1500s, though the earliest firmly documented uses are much later. Either way, the goal was text that looked like real language without being readable, so customers judged the type, not the words.

Into the digital age

Lorem ipsum got two big boosts:

  • 1960s: Letraset dry-transfer sheets used it for sample text, putting it in front of every graphic designer.
  • 1980s: desktop publishing software, notably Aldus PageMaker, shipped lorem ipsum templates, and it became the default filler of the digital design world.

Today it’s built into design tools, CMS themes, website builders and generators like ours.

Why it works so well

  1. Realistic shape. Word and sentence lengths roughly resemble English and other European languages, so layouts look natural.
  2. Unreadable. Reviewers focus on design, not content.
  3. Universally recognised. Nobody mistakes it for final copy, at least in theory.

Does it mean anything?

Not really. The scrambled version mixes real Latin words (dolor, sit, amet, magna, labore) with fragments and inventions. Translated loosely it reads like nonsense about pain, effort and labour, which some designers find fitting.

Modern variations

The standard generator output mixes in extra Latin-ish vocabulary to avoid repetition, which is what our lorem ipsum generator does while keeping the classic opening sentence as an option. There are also novelty versions such as Bacon Ipsum and Hipster Ipsum, but for professional work, classic lorem ipsum, or better, realistic draft copy, is usually best. When and how to use it well is covered in When to Use Placeholder Text (and When Not To).
